Are Asphalt Cracks Bad? When to Worry (and When Not To) — Ontario Guide
Hairline crack vs alligator cracking vs sinking — a Barrie homeowner's guide to which driveway cracks need action and which can wait.
Not every crack is an emergency
Some cracks are normal aging — others are warning signs that water is destroying your driveway from underneath. Here's how to tell the difference in Ontario.
Cracks you can wait on (briefly)
- Hairline surface cracks under 1/8"
- Single, isolated cracks less than 1/2" wide
- Edge cracks where the asphalt meets grass
These are normal aging. Get them sealed at the next sealcoat — but they're not urgent.
Cracks that need hot rubber filling now
- Cracks 1/2" or wider
- Cracks running long stretches of the driveway
- Cracks at low spots where water pools
- New cracks appearing year-over-year
Why "now"? Water in cracks freezes, expands, and pries asphalt apart. One season of ignoring a 1/2" crack can turn into a 2" trench.
Red-flag cracking — call us
- Alligator pattern (interconnected cracks like reptile skin) = base failure
- Sinking spots = sub-base washout
- Heaving = frost movement under the slab
- Recurring potholes = base + drainage problem
These usually need patching or sectional repair, not just crack fill.
What we do
- Hot rubber crack fill before every sealcoat
- Saw-cut patching for failed sections
- Honest "you don't need replacement" assessments
